The CSV filetype is a plain text file that holds lists of data and is useful for moving information between different software. Sometimes when opening a CSV file in Microsoft Excel the data appears jumbled such as in this example. This data is from an Atlas Copco MTF6000 controller and contains torque verification data. By examining the text I can see that the data is separated using semicolons, not commas. This would explain why Excel isnt properly displaying the data. To fix this issue we must open the Text Import Wizard. In older versions of Excel this is done by opening the CSV file using the File Import action, but in this newer version we must manually open the file by selecting File, then opening it from the disk or recent files list. Now that the Text Import Wizard is open we must tell Excel to use the Delimited data type which separates the text into fields using certain characters. Select Delimited and click next. If youre using a PC (Windows), open the Windows Start Menu and click Control Panel. Click Region. Now, make sure that the Decimal symbol field is set to period (.) and that the List separator field is set to comma (,).
Change your settings within Excel to resolve this issue. In Excel, navigate to Data Import External Data Import Data/Import From Text and choose 65001 Unicode (UTF-8). Save your settings then re-open your file to confirm that special characters are displayed correctly.
Indicate separator directly in CSV file For this, open your file in any text editor, say Notepad, and type the below string before any other data: To separate values with comma: sep=, To separate values with semicolon: sep=; To separate values with a pipe: sep=|
The quotation marks are called text qualifiers, and they let Excel (or any other program you use to open CSVs) know that the field should be read in as is. Say, for instance, you had a data table filled with data about books.
Open a new Excel sheet. Click the Data tab, then From Text. Select the CSV file that has the data clustered into one column. Select Delimited, then make sure the File Origin is Unicode UTF-8. Select Comma (this is Affinitys default list separator). Finally, click Finish. Remember to Save your document!
CSV files use double-quote marks to delimit field values that have spaces, so a value like Santa Claus gets saved as Santa Claus to preserve the space. If a field value contains double-quotes, then the double-quotes get doubled-up so the parser can tell the difference.
To change your default CSV setting in Windows: Open the Windows Start Menu and click Control Panel. Open the Regional and Language Options dialog box. Click the Regional Options tab. Click Customize/Additional settings (Windows 10) Type a comma into the List separator box (,) Click OK twice to confirm the change.
The easiest way to add a comma, or text or the symbol at the end of the each line is to select the text you wish to add to, hit control+H a and this Find What add \r, it means to extend and be sure that this is the clicked to extend and the over here in selection, okay? and just add your desired symbol or comma and hit
