A margin is the empty space between a documents contents and the edges of the page. Words default margins are 1 inch on each side of the page, but you can change the margins to accommodate the needs of your document.

In the open document, click on Page Layout in the top menu. Under Page Layout, click on Margins. Select the desired pre-set margins or select Custom to enter values.
