The apostrophe after a last name shows possession. Its use depends on the last letter of the last name. If the last name ends in a letter other than s, add an apostrophe, followed by the letter s. If the last name ends in s, either add just an apostrophe, or add an apostrophe followed by the letter s.
To form the POSSESSIVE of: SINGLE NOUNS, including those ending in s, add s. [Includes nouns ending in -se, -z, -ze or -ce].
To form the possessive, add apostrophe + s to the noun. If the noun is plural, or already ends in s, just add an apostrophe after the s. For names ending in s, you can either add an apostrophe + s, or just an apostrophe.
There are only two options for pluralizing by adding letters: If your last name ends with a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h (exceptions: ch and sh), i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, t, u, v, w, or y just add an s. If your last name ends with s, x, z, ch, or sh add an e and s.
Q. When a persons name ends in s, how do you form the possessive? Chicago and MLA say add s as in: Mills becomes Millss. APA says add s to singular names ending in s, except if the name ends in an unpronounced s and then use only an apostrophe: Descartes becomes Descartes
When forming the possessive of singular proper names ending in s, convention allows for either adding just an apostrophe or an apostrophe plus s. While some style guides prefer one over the other, both James and Jamess are technically correct.
1. The possessive. Quick Use: Use an apostrophe + s for singular nouns (sea, sky), common nouns ending with s (tigress, mistress), and irregular plural nouns (women, children). Use only the apostrophe for proper nouns ending with s (Tess, Jesus, Texas) and regular plural nouns (cars, protestors).
The spelling Chriss, with an additional S after the apostrophe, is a more common way to write the possessive form of Chris. Most style guides, such as the Chicago Manual of Style, recommend that you use an apostrophe and an S to create the possessive form of a singular noun.
