Why is my EGT gauge not reading correctly?

The temperature sensor does occassionally fail in a gauge but this is not often. The most common causes of an Exhaust Temperature gauge not working is wiring or incorrect installation. If your gauge is erractically jumping around or measuring maximum temperature this is most often the cause of a damaged sensor.

Where do you put the temperature probe on an exhaust gas?

The EGT sensor should be placed close to the cylinder head exhaust ports and before the turbocharger. Typically we tap the exhaust manifold with the 1/8 NPT tap and thread the EGT sensor directly into the exhaust manifold. The 1/8 NPT pipe thread seals fine if the exhaust manifold wall is thicker than 0.120 (3mm).

How do I know if my EGT probe is bad?

A quick way to check the EGT probe is to disconnect it from whatever device you are using to read it put an ohm meter across both output wires (the wire colors are usually red yellow). If you get an open reading then the probe is probably bad. If you get somewhere between 3 to 12 ohms then it may still be okay.

What happens if EGT is too high?

At Manta Performance, we recommend that your EGT stay under 550C (as measured at the turbo outlet) to assure your engines safety. What happens when your EGT gets too high? Nothing good! Certain parts of your engine can fail due to the excessive heat produced.

Can a EGT sensor be cleaned?

Inspect the sensor for any build-up of contaminants and clean with a clean, dry cloth as required.

What is the problem with the EGT sensor?

Exhaust gas temperature sensor - Symptoms: Effects Engine control lamp is on. Increase in exhaust emissions (CO, NOx and HC) Poor driving behaviour because of shortened regeneration intervals of the particulate filter. Increased fuel consumption caused by longer particulate filter regeneration.

What should EGTs be at?

Commonly, diesel performance enthusiasts will ask: Whats a safe EGT? The short answer is anything sustained below 1350 degrees Fahrenheit is acceptable by most OEM standards so long as your other engine temperatures remain within safe boundaries.
