Satisfactory colposcopy is defined as visualization of the entire squamo-columnar junction and margins of any visible lesions. The squamo-columnar junction may be difficult to visualize in its entirety, which is a requirement of a satisfactory colposcopic examination.
Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions look slightly abnormal when looked at under a microscope. They are usually caused by infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) and are found when a Pap test or biopsy is done.
Pap tests, sometimes called Pap smears, look for abnormal cells on your cervix that can possibly lead to cervical cancer. Pap tests find cell changes caused by high-risk HPV, but they dont test for HPV itself. After your doctor sends your Pap test to the lab, the results will come back as normal or abnormal.
Normal colposcopic findings Identify the columnar epithelium, and upper limit of the TZ. Look for and note the following normal findings: ectopy, metaplastic squamous epithelium (mature or immature), nabothian cysts, crypt (gland) openings, deciduosis in pregnancy or atrophy.
Normal result About 4 in 10 colposcopy results are normal. This means no cell changes (abnormal cells) were found in your cervix. You can have a normal colposcopy result even if you had an abnormal cervical screening result. This is because cervical screening looks to see if there are cell changes.
Your healthcare provider will insert an instrument called a speculum into your vagina. This will spread the walls of the vagina apart to show the cervix. Your healthcare provider will use a small brush, swab or spatula to gently remove cells from the cervix and back of the vagina.
A normal result means your cervix appears healthy and you have a low risk of developing cervical cancer before your next screening test. Depending on your age, youll be invited for a cervical screening appointment in 3 or 5 years. About 6 out of 10 women who have a colposcopy have abnormal cells in their cervix.
An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
