While impressions measure the number of times your ad was displayed, clicks measure the number of times users interacted with your ad.
I think maybe the subtle difference between the 2 words is as the follows: If you have an image of something or someone, you have a picture or idea of them in your mind. Your impression of a person or thing is what you think they are like, usually after having seen or heard them.
