The colposcopy procedure usually takes about 5 minutes, but it can take longer (10 to 15 minutes) if treatment is carried out. This is also called a colposcopy-guided cervical biopsy. A colposcopy uses an instrument with a special lens to look at the cervical tissues. A cervical biopsy may be done to find cancer or precancer cells on the cervix. Cells that appear to be abnormal, but are not yet cancerous, are called precancerous.
Your healthcare provider may advise that you take a pain reliever 30 minutes before the procedure. They may give you a sedative before the anesthesia is started. If sedation is given, you will need someone to drive you home afterwards. You may want to bring a sanitary pad to wear home after the procedure.
A colposcopy is relatively painless. You may feel slight pressure when the speculum enters your vagina. You may feel a slight burning or stinging when the solution comes into contact with your cervix. If you need a biopsy, you may feel a sharp pinch or a sensation like a period cramp when the tissue sample is excised.
If you have a biopsy, your provider may apply a yellow-brown solution to your cervix. This acts as a liquid bandage. Some people feel a little dizzy or nauseated right after the colposcopy. If you feel this way, tell your provider and lie down until the feeling goes away.
A colposcopy is nearly pain-free. You might feel pressure when the speculum goes in. It might also sting or burn a little when they wash your cervix with the vinegar-like solution. The most common treatment is called large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ). This removes a small area of the cervix where the cell changes are. Its usually done with a local anaesthetic which numbs just the area being treated. Sometimes you may need to be asleep with general anaesthetic during LLETZ.
