okay so first of all I have here a document which is just plain text and I want to change the headings in this document into numbered academic headings in order to create chapters sections and subsections so first of all I have here heading 1 and heading 2 I want more options than this so Iamp;#39;m going to go to styles and then manage styles and then recommend and Iamp;#39;m going to select heading 2 and Iamp;#39;m going to change this to show then heading 3 and change that to show as well and I could have up to nine different heading styles here Iamp;#39;m only going to use the first three then Iamp;#39;m going to select ok and then close this now I have heading one two and three here now Iamp;#39;m going to select this and define new multi-level lists theyamp;#39;re not going to select more hair so I can see all of my options and Iamp;#39;m going to start setting up the format that I want so I donamp;#39;t want it to look like this I want the first level to be chapters so

Section headings and subheadings should be organized in a hierarchy, with Section Heading (h2) first, followed by subheadings in order (Section Subheading (h3) will nestle under Section Heading (h2), Detailed Subheading (h4) under Section Subheading (h3), etc.).
Open your document that uses built-in heading styles, and select the first Heading 1. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, choose Multilevel List. Under List Library, choose the numbering style you would like to use in your document.

In the Navigation pane, select the Headings tab. Do any of the following: To move part of the document, select the heading and drag it to a new location. To change the headings level or add a heading, right-click the heading, and then choose the action you want.
Add a heading Select the text you want to use as a heading. On the Home tab, move the pointer over different headings in the Styles gallery. Notice as you pause over each style, your text will change so you can see how it will look in your document. Click the heading style you want to use.
