Log in to the AWS Management Console, display the EC2 page for your region, then click Instances. Choose the instance from which you want to create a custom AMI. Click Actions and click Create Image. Type a name for Image Name that is easily identifiable to you and, optionally, input text for Image Description.
To create a custom AMI, launch an Elastic Beanstalk platform AMI in Amazon EC2, customize the software and configuration to your needs, and then stop the instance and save an AMI from it.
For example, when you create a custom AMI, you are essentially creating a new Amazon EBS-backed AMI from an existing instance. This involves creating a new Amazon EBS snapshot of the instances root volume and then registering the snapshot as a new AMI.
An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is a master image for the creation of virtual servers -- known as EC2 instances -- in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment. The machine images are like templates that are configured with an operating system and other software that determine the users operating environment.
A custom AMI also allows you to make changes to low-level components, such as the Linux kernel, that are difficult to implement or take a long time to apply in configuration files.
It may take a few minutes for the AMI to be created. After it is created, it will appear in the AMIs view in AWS Explorer. To display this view, double-click the Amazon EC2 | AMIs node in AWS Explorer. To see your AMIs, from the Viewing drop-down list, choose Owned By Me.
Each AMI includes a template for the root volume required for a particular type of instance. A typical example might contain an operating system, an application server and applications.
