Log into the AWS Management Console, navigate to the EC2 dashboard, and select the instance you want to modify. Choose the Actions menu, then Instance State, and click Stop. Remember, the instance must be completely stopped; hibernation wont suffice for this process.
Updating AMIs. Update a Linux AMI. Update a Windows Server AMI. Update a golden AMI using Automation, AWS Lambda, and Parameter Store. Using AWS Support self-service runbooks. Run the EC2Rescue tool on undocHubable instances. Reset passwords and SSH keys on EC2 instances. Passing data to Automation using input transformers.
A custom AMI also allows you to make changes to low-level components, such as the Linux kernel, that are difficult to implement or take a long time to apply in configuration files.
The answer is that you cannot replace the AMI for an existing EC2 instance. However, you can replace the root volume with a new volume which is basically the same thing. That new root volume can come from another EC2 instance.
Lets dive right in.. Step 1: Create Image from Running Instances. From the EC2 console, select the Actions button on the running instance, It gives a dropdown; click on Image and templates, then select Create Image. You will see the AMI creation page. Step 2: Edit AMIs Permission. Step 3: Launch Instance from AMI.
You cant update the AMI of an instance without replacing it with a new instance. Typically you simply run the operating system updates - yum update / apt update upgrade / windows update.
Log in to the AWS Management Console, display the EC2 page for your region, then click Instances. Choose the instance from which you want to create a custom AMI. Click Actions and click Create Image. Type a name for Image Name that is easily identifiable to you and, optionally, input text for Image Description.
AMI is a snapshot of your instance at a certain time and all the files on EBS volumes are saved to the AMI.
