Youll only be invited again if a recent test was abnormal. If youre 65 or older and have never been for cervical screening, or have not had cervical screening since the age of 50, you can ask your GP for a test.
Yes. Doctors recommend routine cervical cancer screening, regardless of your sexual history. Tests used to screen for cervical cancer include the Pap test and the HPV test. Your doctor can help you understand whether one or both of these tests is best for you.
The Pap test is a screening tool that can help detect abnormal cells on your cervix. This early detection can be important in stopping precancerous cells from progressing to cervical cancer. Cervical cancer, if caught early, is highly treatable.
What about using a numbing agent? If youve had an IUD inserted, your provider probably used a numbing agent to help reduce pain in your vagina and cervix. Unfortunately, it isnt possible to do the same before a Pap smear. The presence of a numbing agent can obscure your results.
A pelvic examination under general anaesthetic is a safe procedure. Your nurse will tell you who to contact if you have any problems after your test. Your doctor makes sure the benefits of this examination outweigh any possible risks.
The short answer to this question is, yes, you can be sedated to get a pelvic exam and Pap smear.
In most cases, the presence of abnormal squamous cells does not indicate the presence of cervical cancer. However, abnormal Pap results should always be discussed with a medical professional so that an individualized action plan can be created.
Pap test. A speculum is inserted into the vagina to widen it. Then, a brush is inserted into the vagina to collect cells from the cervix. The cells are checked under a microscope for signs of disease.
