XML Tag names cannot contain any of the characters :! #$%()*+,/;? @[\]^`{|}~, nor a space character, and cannot begin with -, ., or a numeric digit. Only the following characters produce error 13640 when the WRITE-XML and WRITEXML-SCHEMA methods are executed: #$% and the space character since OpenEdge 11.6.
Adding control characters (, , , ) into xml data can cause the parser to miss understand the resulting data. The solution is to escape the control characters so that the parser can interpret them correctly as data, and not confuse them for markup.
The ampersand () is a special character in XML used to begin entity references. To treat it as data, it must be escaped as amp;. This preserves its intended meaning while maintaining XML structure.
The syntax for adding XML comments in your code is triple slashes /// followed by one of the supported XML tags. Theres IntelliSense support for writing documentation comments that also provides a template comment on entering the third slash in the triple slash.

Inserting special characters Directly type the special character (if this is possible) or copy it from a third-party application (such as Windows Character Map utility), then paste it in the XML document. Click on the character displayed in a character palette of the Characters tool.
XML Naming Rules Element names must start with a letter or underscore. Element names cannot start with the letters xml (or XML, or Xml, etc) Element names can contain letters, digits, hyphens, underscores, and periods. Element names cannot contain spaces.
