Apply Pressure. This is one of the first tips you will need in order to complete a successful engraving project. While you dont need to lean on the pen while using it - and you wouldnt want to it, either - it is important to provide enough pressure to actually make your mark on the object at hand.
Secure the metal piece firmly to prevent any movement while engraving. Hold the rotary tool like a pencil and start engraving along the lines of your design, applying steady pressure. For best results, move the tool in a consistent direction and use a light touch to avoid slipping or gouging the metal.
