all right so for this video i wanted to address a common question i get which is can i apply for my ein for my business before the entity is actually created right and so when would this arise well there are some states in the u.s where the process is quite slow to get an llc or corporation form so you file the documents with the state and a lot of times you have to wait up to two weeks to get the confirmation from the state that the entity is formed and legally existing and ready to go and so then youamp;#39;re asking yourself well during that two-week period can i go ahead and apply for my ein and get the ein while iamp;#39;m waiting for the llc or the corporation to get formed the short answer is you know can you apply for it early you can the irs will allow this but in my opinion and a lot of other practitioners agree with this it is not recommended at all and hereamp;#39;s why itamp;#39;s not recommended because thereamp;#39;s always a chance that when you file the documents

An EIN is like an SSN for your business. For those simply operating sole proprietorships, they can use their SSN with the IRS for tax purposes and to open a business bank account. If you form an LLC, want to hire employees or would like to establish business credit, though, youll need to obtain an EIN.
A sole proprietor without employees who isnt required to file any excise tax return and hasnt established a pension, profit-sharing, or retirement plan doesnt need an EIN (but can get one).
An LLC applies for an EIN by filing Form SS-4, Application for Employer Identification Number. See Form SS-4 for information on applying for an EIN. A single-member LLC that is a disregarded entity that does not have employees and does not have an excise tax liability does not need an EIN.
This EIN is your permanent number and can be used immediately for most of your business needs, including: Opening a bank account. Applying for business licenses. Filing a tax return by mail.
You should only use your EIN to rent an apartment if you are conducting business in the dwelling, such as working from home or using part of the space as an office. Otherwise, you may violate the law or the lease agreement by using your EIN for personal purposes.
Use your EIN on all of the items that you send to the IRS and the Social Security Administration (SSA). Caution: An EIN is for use in connection with your business activities only. Do not use your EIN in place of your social security number (SSN).
The answer to that question is yes. You can sign up for a business credit card using only your Employer Identification Number (EIN), without having to provide your Social Security Number (SSN).
The tax-exempt organization will need the social security number or EIN of an independent contractor to complete Form 1099-MISC. If the independent contractor is a sole proprietor, the SSN is preferred.
