You EIN is an Employer Identification number. You use it to file any payroll related tax forms with the IRS. It may be asked for in a few other instances but its generally a tracking number for payroll purposes. It does not change how you file or pay taxes.
When filling out forms for your business, use its EIN wherever an individual would normally use an ITIN or SSN. For example, when applying for a business bank account or loan, you can apply with the business EIN instead of the business owners SSN or ITIN.
For more information about EIN application procedures, see question 4 of FAQs regarding applying for tax exemption. The EIN is not your tax-exempt number. That term generally refers to a number assigned by a state agency that identifies organizations as exempt from state sales and use taxes.
Use your EIN on all of the items that you send to the IRS and the Social Security Administration (SSA). Caution: An EIN is for use in connection with your business activities only. Do not use your EIN in place of your social security number (SSN).
The EIN will still belong to the business entity and can be used at a later date, should the need arise. If you receive an EIN but later determine you do not need the number (the new business never started up, for example), the IRS can close your business account.
EIN. An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is also known as a federal tax identification number, and is used to identify a business entity. It is also used by estates and trusts which have income which is required to be reported on Form 1041, U.S. Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts.
For certain types of business tax deductions, such as home office deductions, your chances of an IRS audit may decrease if you have an EIN. An EIN helps demonstrate to the IRS that you actually have a business. Your clients may prefer to use your EIN for their own tax reasons.
Your state tax ID and federal tax ID numbers also known as an Employer Identification Number (EIN) work like a personal social security number, but for your business. They let your small business pay state and federal taxes.
