Paragraph indentation Indent the first line of each paragraph of text 0.5 in. from the left margin. Use the tab key or the automatic paragraph-formatting function of your word-processing program to achieve the indentation (the default setting is likely already 0.5 in.). Do not use the space bar to create indentation.
In a book, too much white space can look awkward. Manuscript format is to indent the first line of each new paragraph (and to double space). Dont skip lines when doing this, unless youre indicating a larger break in the story. This is the industry standard, so editors and agents are expecting it.
Answer. Yes, indent the first line of every paragraph, except for the Abstract (see instructions below). Paragraphs are indented 0.5 or Tab key once. Check the APA Help guide to see a Sample Paper.
First-line indent by default Put the cursor anywhere in the paragraph. On the Home tab, right-click the Normal style, and choose Modify. Select Format, and then choose Paragraph. On the Indents and Spacing tab, under Indentation, select First line. Select OK. Select OK again.
APA style identifies two types of indentation: First line and hanging. First line indentation begins to the right of where the next line begins. APA requires most paragraphs to adhere to first line indentation. Hanging indentation places the first line of a paragraph to the left of where the next line starts.
As remarked above, the first paragraph after a title or section heading is not indented. Every succeeding paragraph should be indented; the tab key on any keyboard will do this for you. For certain kinds of writing, such as technical reports and business letters, there is another format which is sometimes preferred.
An indentation is a notch, cut, or dent in something. If you take a hammer to a piece of metal, you will make a series of indentations. The dent in indentation shares a root with your dentist, and an indentation is basically like a tooth mark.
Many people believe that every single paragraph in a piece of text should be indented. This is actually unnecessary. You should use indentation to indicate a new paragraph. Given the fact that it is pretty obvious that the first paragraph is a new paragraph, there is absolutely no need to indent it at all.
