If the dent is small put a small amount of dry wall compound, also called mud, on the knife and smooth it into the dent. It takes some practice, but it is not hard to do and the more you practice the better the results will be.
Its pretty straightforward how to do this. Use hot household iron, and take a wet paper towel or paper bag and put it over the dent. Then iron that area of the wood with fairly strong pressure. The paper towel will generate steam and dry out, but the dent should become less and less apparent.

Scrape away loose debris from the hole. Cover the hole or dent with fast-drying spackle to bring the spackle level with the drywall surface and let it dry 24 hours -- or the time recommended by the manufacturers instructions. Sand smooth.
Take a small amount of spackling compound or lightweight joint compound on the putty knife and apply it to the dent. Use the knife to spread the compound evenly, filling the dent completely. Remove any excess compound, leaving a smooth surface. Allow the compound to dry ing to the manufacturers instructions.
