The international standard recommends writing the date as year, then month, then the day: YYYY-MM-DD. So if both Australians and Americans used this, they would both write the date as 2019-02-03. Writing the date this way avoids confusion by placing the year first.
The standard format for writing dates in the United States is Month-Day-Year. For example, August 30, 2023. You may also see the month abbreviated to three letters, such as Aug 30, 2023.
In both American and British English, the word or number order will depend on the context. For example, if you wish to write the date in the form of a full sentence, it will look like one of these: Today is the 1st of January, 2020. The date is January 1st, 2020.
In written American English, the month of the date comes before the day and year. For example, Independence Day in the USA is on July 4th each year. In the year 2000 the date was 4/7/2000 in British English. In American English this is written 7/4/2000.
DD/MM/YYYY or DD-MM-YYYY: This format is widely used in Europe, Asia, and many other parts of the world. For example, January 27, 2024, would be represented as 27/01/2024 or 27-01-2024. MM/DD/YYYY or MM-DD-YYYY or MM DD YYYY: Predominantly used in the United States, Canada, and the Philippines.
In America, the date is formally written in month/day/year form. Thus, January 1, 2011 is widely considered to be correct.
When referring to a specific date in the month-day date format, use cardinal numbers (one, two, three) rather than ordinal numbers (first, second, third). This may feel counterintuitive because we normally use ordinal numbers when we speak of dates.
Using ordinal numbers in dates To do this, simply add the appropriate ordinal suffix after the number. Heres the pattern: 1st (First) 2nd (Second)
