The table of contents is a small section at the beginning of a piece of writing that outlines the sections or chapters and lists their page numbers so the reader can jump ahead.
A table of contents is usually organized by page, so that each chapter or section is listed in the order in which it appears. This lends structure and consistency to the table of contents. Its also always located in the front -- sort of like a roadmap of what the reader can expect to find, and where.
Click into the table of contents, so that your cursor is in the first section. Choose the Position and Alignment you prefer, and then click the Format button. In the Page Number Format window, choose i, ii, iii, as the Number format. If you want a different starting page number, you may select it in this window.
Click where you want to insert the table of contents usually near the beginning of a document. Click References Table of Contents and then choose an Automatic Table of Contents style from the list.
