Use a long basting stitch on the segment where the zipper will go, then anchor your seam and continue with a classic straight stitch. That way you can iron the seam open and unpick the basting stitch when you go in to sew your zipper. Now try it on to see how the waist fits.
Pin the zipper in place on your fabric circle. The sides of the snipped zipper tape should be flush with the raw edges of the fabric circle. Attach a Zipper foot. Stitch this first side of the zipper in place all around.
Actually, you can build in a beautiful curve while you a lapped zipper successfully and easily by hand. Traditionally, a nicely shaped seam is easy enough to attain by clipping into the seam allowances.
Fold in the sides to the middle and press. Place the zipper tape inside the tab and fold the tab in half over the end. You can pin or add clips to hold it in place, and then topstitch close to the inner edge sewing only over the zipper tape (not going to the ends of the tab). Make sure to backstitch well at each end.
{Tutorial} Turn a separating zipper into a closed end zipper Cut a fabric tab. Fold 1 cm (3/8) to wrong side. Mark the desired length. Align the tab. Topstitch the tab. Remove excess teeth by cutting around them. Zipper wrong side. Right side of the now closed end zipper.
Like top stops, these bottom stops either crimp onto the zipper tape or pierce it and wrap around the teeth. A zipper bottom stop permanently closes the zipper end that its installed on. You only need one bottom stop per end, and you can it before or after sewing.
Open End Zips: These zips are ones that open fully so that the two sides of the zip separate from each other. For example, these may be used on a jacket or cardigan so you can open it all the way. These come in different styles for example Plastic Open End, Nylon Open End, Metal Open End and Heavy Duty Open End.
How to Fix a Broken or Separated Zipper Use Pliers to Remove the Stopper. Use pliers to get a good grip on the bottom stop (the little band of metal or plastic at the bottom of the zipper teeth) and pry it off. Position the Zipper Pull. Realign the Zipper Teeth. Reposition the Zipper Pull. Reattach or Sew New Zipper Stop.
