The Math Center presents Finding the Area of a Figure. In this presentation, we will talk about what is area and then look at how you find the area of a rectangle, the area of a square, the area of a parallelogram, the area of a triangle, and finally the area of a circle. Lets start by talking about what we mean by the area of a figure. The area of a figure is a measurement of the region within its boundaries. You can think of it like tiles on a floor. The area of a figure is how many tiles you would need to cover the floor. We always use square units for area (square feet, square cm, etc.) So for instance, if I say a room is 100 square feet, that means I would need 100 squares to cover the floor if each square was 1 foot by 1 foot. Now lets look at some formulas that give us the area of different geometric shapes. The first is the area of a rectangle. The formula for area of a rectangle is area equals length times width. If we are asked to find the area of a rectangle that has a l
