Measuring about the size of a finger, the ACL is a large, dense cord that can take up to 500 pounds of pressure before it will tear. The ACLs vital function of directing the tibia in its correct path from the end of the femur maintains joint stability.
An MRI is able to provide a picture of the ACL and is extremely useful in determining if the ACL has sustained an injury and if so to what extent. This is particularly important for our topic at hand, because the difference between an ACL sprain and an ACL tear is the extent to which the ligament has been injured.
An ACL injury can occur if you: Get hit very hard on the side of your knee, such as during a football tackle. Overextending your knee joint. Quickly stop moving and change direction while running, landing from a jump, or turning.
What are the symptoms of an ACL injury or tear? A pop in the knee at the time of injury. Swelling of the knee. Inability to bear weight on leg (though some have little or no pain) Instability of the knee.
The ACL has a tensile strength of 494.6 lbs. Without an ACL the tibia can translate forward with 30.1 lbs of force,31,32 making the knee more susceptible to injury. The quadriceps muscle alone can tear the ACL itself if it can generate 1,011.6 lbs of force with the knee at 20 of flexion.
Signs and symptoms of an ACL injury usually include: A loud pop or a popping sensation in the knee. Severe pain and inability to continue activity. Rapid swelling.
An ACL injury often occurs during sports when your foot is firmly planted and a sudden force hits your knee while your leg is straight or slightly bent. This can happen when you change direction rapidly or land from a jump.
It is made tough, able to withstand up to 500 pounds of pressure; but intense or awkward jumping or cutting movements can burst through that ceiling and tear the ACL. So far, so common: Each year, more than 250,000 Americans will injure an ACL.
