How does Pap react to Hucks efforts to read? He is proud of his son. It makes him angry.
Pap symbolizes dishonesty, because he pretends to be reformed and a better father. He represents poverty because he has nothing, and refuses to provide the basic necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter for himself and Huck.
Pap is an abusive drunkard who channels his anger at the world into violence against his son. His main motivations in the book are jealousy, greed, and alcoholism. He feels intensely jealous of Huck for his fortune, and he wants access to that money so that he can fuel his drinking problem.
Although the widow wants to raise Huck, Pap convinces a new judge that he has changed and will start a life free from alcohol and sin. The new judge decides that hed druther not take a child away from its father and grants custody to Pap.
Hucks fear is understated, but it suggests that his previous life with Pap was violent and dysfunctional. Moreover, the subtle threat of abuse underscores the theme of a chaotic and violent environment after the Civil War, an environment that Huck cannot entirely avoid despite his plans and cunning.
Huck describes Pap as an abusive, drunken neglectful father. Paps wife is dead, and he has always refused to properly care and provide for their son, Huck. He abandons Huck for long periods of time because he is selfish, and does not love his son.
Why is Pap angry with Huck? Pap is angry that Judge Thatcher has been putting off the Trial to prevent him from taking Hucks money. Hes also angry that Huck lives a better life than him and is educated.
In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Pap, Hucks father, was shot in the back. Jim finds his body in the floating house in Chapter 9, but Huck does not learn that his father is dead until the end of the book.
