Are there any circumstances where a donation may be refused? Some medical conditions, such as contagious diseases and extreme emaciation or obesity, can render a body unacceptable for scientific study. Additionally, certain circumstances of death may preclude donation.
The body is not acceptable for anatomical study due to, for example, being extremely emaciated, being extremely obese, or having an extensive medical or surgical history. The body has been autopsied or mutilated or is decomposed.
We cannot accept bodies that have suffered major trauma at the time of death (e.g., automobile accidents), bodies that have unhealed major surgery prior to death or have been autopsied, or bodies from which major organs have been removed/donated.
Do any medical conditions exclude someone from becoming an organ donor? Yes, some conditions such as an actively spreading cancer or infection, or heart disease, may prevent a person from becoming a donor. But you can still sign up as an organ donor regardless of any preexisting or past medical conditions.
The biggest drawback of donating your body is that your family cannot have a service with the body present. You can have a memorial service without a viewing. In some cases, the funeral home will allow for immediate family to have a closed viewing, much like an identification viewing.
Body Donations Bodies are usually cremated within one to three years of donation. Many facilities also hold an annual ceremony to thank donors and their families. A donation of your body to science will have the benefit of avoiding funeral and burial costs.
Body donors must be free of infectious diseases such as HIV, AIDs, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease. Donors body weight must be less than 250 lbs. If there has been a violent death, suicide or vital organs have been removed for transplant purposes, the body will be not be accepted.
