The surgeon drills small holes into the upper and lower leg bones where these bones come close together at the knee joint. The holes form tunnels through which the graft will be anchored. The surgeon will also make another incision in the knee and insert the graft (replacement tissue).
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the two cruciate ligaments which stabilizes the knee joint by preventing excessive forward movements of the tibia or limiting rotational knee movements.
ACL surgery is usually a day case operation. However, this would still be classified as major surgery. The surgery requires harvesting of tissue from other parts of the leg which can be painful. Tunnels are drilled within the bones and there is usually postoperative pain and swelling associated with this.
Most commonly, patients need around 9-12 months to return to full sports participation, with some returning sooner and others later. Return to sports activities takes time.
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the key ligaments that help stabilize the knee joint. The ACL connects the thighbone (femur) to the shinbone (tibia).
Most people who tear their ACL feel pain and a pop in their knee when the injury happens. Their knee usually gets swollen soon after the injury. After the swelling goes down, someone with an ACL tear usually can walk. But the knee may feel unstable and can give way and make the person stumble or fall.
Some people can live and function normally with a torn ACL. However, most people complain that their knee is unstable and may give out with physical activity. Unstable knee after ACL tears can lead to further knee damage. You are also less likely to return to the same level of sports without the ACL.
The short answer is yes. After the pain and swelling subsides and if there is no other injury to your knee, you may be able to walk in straight lines, go up and down stairs and even potentially jog in a straight line. The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is an important ligament that provides stability to the knee.
