Acceptable specimens for the Pap Test include cervical, cervical and vaginal, endocervical, vaginal and/or vulvar scrapings or brushings.
Vaginal smears are obtained by scraping the middle or posterior 1/3 of the lateral vaginal wall; cervical by scraping the circumference of the cervical os and endocervical by brushing, scraping, or aspirating the endocervical canal. All 3 smears should be collected and then smeared on a single slide.
Cytology is the exam of a single cell type, as often found in fluid specimens. Its mainly used to diagnose or screen for cancer. Its also used to screen for fetal abnormalities, for pap smears, to diagnose infectious organisms, and in other screening and diagnostic areas.
The human papillomavirus (HPV) test checks cells for infection with high-risk HPV types that can cause cervical cancer. The Pap test (also called a Pap smear or cervical cytology) collects cervical cells so they can be checked for changes caused by HPV that mayif left untreatedturn into cervical cancer.
Types of screening Conventional PapIn a conventional Pap smear, samples are smeared directly onto a microscope slide after collection. Liquid-based cytologyThe sample of (epithelial) cells is taken from the transitional zone, the squamocolumnar junction of the cervix, between the ectocervix and the endocervix.
For two days before your test, you should avoid disrupting the cervical cells in any way, including: Douching. Using vaginal creams, suppositories, or medicine.
Lubrication of the vaginal introitus and speculum does not affect Papanicolaou smears.
During a Pap test, a tool called a speculum holds the vaginal walls apart. A sample of cells from the cervix is collected using a soft brush and a flat scraping device called a spatula (1 and 2).
