To add or remove access control list (ACL) entries from a file or directory, get the FileSecurity or DirectorySecurity object from the file or directory. Modify the object, and then apply it back to the file or directory.
Check if a file has an ACL by using the ls command. filename specifies the file or directory. In the output, a plus sign (+) to the right of the mode field indicates that the file has an ACL.
The list of users that have access to the item and the operations that they can perform on the item is called an access control list (ACL). An ACL is used at run time to determine what CRUD operations a user can execute on a particular item or item type.
In computer security, an access-control list (ACL) is a list of permissions associated with a system resource (object or facility). An ACL specifies which users or system processes are granted access to resources, as well as what operations are allowed on given resources.
An access control list (ACL) lets you assign permissions for each unique user or group. Suppose you have user1, user2, and user3 on a system. Users user2 and user3 are part of a demo group. You must assign this permission scheme to the sample directory: user1: read and write permission.
The getfacl command will display current ACL setting for a file or directory, and the setfacl command is used to modify ACLs. With ACLs you can grant either read-only access, or read-write access on a directory or file to specific users.
In summary, while chown and chmod provide essential ownership and standard permission controls, ACLs enable more precise and flexible permission management, particularly useful in environments where specific access rights are necessary without altering the core ownership structure of files and directories.
The default ACL defines the access permissions all objects under this directory inherit when they are created. A default ACL affects subdirectories as well as files.
