PAP (Password Authentication Protocol): An authentication protocol that uses a password. Not the strongest authentication protocol. CHAP (Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol): Authenticates a user or network host to an authenticating entity (e.g., an internet service provider). Stronger than PAP.
The main difference between PAP and CHAP is that PAP uses a Two-Way Handshake and sends the password in clear-text form, whereas CHAP uses a Three-Way Handshake and never sends the password between the parties. As a result, CHAP is much more secure than PAP.
The Password Authentication Protocol (PAP. PAP validates users by password. PAP does not encrypt passwords for transmission and is thus considered insecure.) is an authentication protocol in which the user name and password are sent to the remote access server in unencrypted form.
Section 2. PAP and Code of Ethics. PAP refers to the Psychological Association of the Philippines; whereas, Code of Ethics refers to the Code of Ethics and Professional Standards for the Psychology Practitioners.
The PAP and CHAP authentication schemes were initially designed for authenticating remote users connecting to networks or systems using PPP. CHAPs three-way handshake protocol offers enhanced security against password guessing and eavesdropping attacks compared to PAPs two-way handshake.
Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) is a password-based authentication protocol used by Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) to validate users.
PAP is more susceptible to cyberattacks than CHAP because it doesnt have the built-in safeguards that CHAP has. Specifically, CHAP doesnt transmit passwords, has an ongoing authentication mechanism, and uses an encrypted calculation to help each entity verify the identity of the other.
