In Canada, radio licenses are required for all commercial and public safety two-way radio systems and devices. ISED radio licenses are critical for effective frequency management and reducing interference issues that can have serious safety implications.
All radio apparatus must be licensed under the Radiocommunication Act unless it is only capable of receiving broadcasting or is exempted under the applicable standard of the Radiocommunication Regulations . There is a separate fee for each transmit and each receive frequency.
The only way to get your Canadian Amateur Radio Operator Certificate is to successfully complete the Canadian basic amateur qualification examination with a mark of 70% or greater.
Do I still need to obtain ISED certification if my device is already FCC certified? Yes, products entering the Canadian market must be ISED certified. A FCC certification alone does not suffice. The labelling requirements in some ICES product standards seem to be different than those specified in ICES-Gen.
English-language and French-language stations must ensure that at least 35% of the Popular Music they broadcast each week is Canadian content. Commercial radio stations also have to ensure that at least 35% of the Popular Music broadcast between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday to Friday is Canadian content.
The first level of authorization is the Amateur Radio Operator Certificate with the Basic Qualification. Passing (70%) a multiple choice exam of 100 questions will provide you with your own call sign and allow you to operate on all Amateur Radio frequencies above 30 MHz.
