In general, professional schools prefer confidential letters (that is, letters for which the applicant has waived his/her right to read the letter), because they assume that confidential evaluations will be more candid. As a result, more weight may be assigned to such letters.
How many letters of recommendation do I need? The medical school letter of recommendation requirements vary from school to school. Most schools require at least three letters, but some may ask for four or five. Make sure you check the specific requirements of each school you hope to apply to.
Even if the student has waived their right to see their letter of recommendation, you may wish to share it with them. Do so in a case by case basis. Some teachers feel more comfortable than others in sharing letters they have written.
Interfolio Dossier is a free, confidential online platform for scholars to collect and curate scholarly materials, request and receive confidential letters of recommendation, and prepare for upcoming evaluations. Your Dossier never expires and we will store your documents indefinitely.
Admissions committees recognize that it displays more confidence on the part of the applicant if letters are confidential (meaning that you cannot see or read the letters). Medical schools also require confidential letters. Under no circumstances will AMCAS provide applicants access to their letters of evaluation.
In order to obtain strong letters of recommendation, you must put in time to develop and nurture relationships with potential recommenders. Do not be a face in the crowd in your classes; go to your professors office hours, ask questions in class, try to get to know them and let them get to know you.
Through your school: Most universities offer to store your recommendation letters, either through the career center, pre-health advising center, or a similar service on campus. Via an online third-party letter storage service (also called a dossier service), such as Interfolio.
Requiring a written request (which is kept on file) from the party seeking a letter of recommendation provides evidence of consent to publication. However, even with such a Page 2 request, letters of recommendation must be treated as confidential during the process of their preparation and dispatch.
