Members of a legislative committee questioned Secretary of State Corey Stapleton regarding an error made in the printing of this fall's voter information pamphlet. The office awarded a $265,000 contract for corrections to a Billings firm owned by Republican consultant Jake Eaton. Stapleton, a Republican, stated that he has known Eaton for some time but selected his company as it was the only one capable of completing the job promptly. The original pamphlet, mailed to 470,000 Montana voters, failed to accurately reflect changes to state law from initiatives 185 and 186. Stapleton discovered the error on October 9 and aimed to provide correct information before absentee ballots were mailed, noting that other print shops could not meet the tight deadline.
