The Parole Evidence Rule, despite its name's similarity to "parole," pertains to contract law, not criminal law. It prohibits parties to a written contract from introducing external evidence that contradicts, modifies, or varies the written terms of an agreement when the contract is deemed complete and finalized. For instance, if a buyer and seller have a signed contract stating a sale price of $500,000, the buyer cannot later present evidence of an agreement for a lower price or additional items, such as a car, as part of the deal. Essentially, the rule asserts that outside evidence cannot be used if a written contract exists, although it does come with several qualifications.
