When purchasing art prints, you will often have the choice between signed prints and unsigned art prints. The general rule of thumb is that if a print has been signed by the artist, it will be much more valuable.
Prints must always be signed in pencil. The artist name and date are to be signed on the bottom right side of a print just below the printed image. Never on the image! The title of the print is to be written in the center of the image just below the printed image.
The value of a print is shaped by factors like quality, notoriety and rarity. The collectability of a print for example, will increase if the image is desirable, the artist is acclaimed or the edition length is limited. If a print run is small, then a prints value is enhanced by its relative rarity.
Artists typically now number their prints so that collectors will know that this print edition is limited and that their print is part of the official edition. The numbering of a print does not in itself make that print any more or less valuable, but it does give collectors some important facts about the print.
Sometimes these prints can even docHub 10 times higher prices than their unsigned counterparts. So if you are having second thoughts about whether to buy a signed or an unsigned print, its advisable to spend a little bit more money on the signed one, as they are easier to sell later on.
Look for the edition number/size of print run and invest early. Seek out signature, stamps and co-signatures. Get to know an artists signature iconography. Hunt for the rare jewels. Examine the condition of a print.
Identifying Age with Details To begin, you will want to see if there are any signs of hand printing. Such signs include printing press impressions or ink smudges. Next, you will want to look for signs of age and the type of paper used. If you hold paper up to a strong light, you may be able to find a watermark.
