For PDF-XChange (Screen capture base on PDF-XChange Editor v7): Open the PDF file. Choose File - Document properties from the menu bar. Choose the Security tab from the left panel. Then tick the option Require a password to open the document and enter the password in the Document Open Password box.
Open a file in Acrobat and choose Tools Protect. Select whether you want to restrict editing with a password or encrypt the file with a certificate or password. Set password or security method as desired. Click OK and then click Save.
One-click option to protect a PDF with a password Open the PDF in Acrobat. Choose File Protect Using Password. Alternatively, you can choose Tools Protect Protect Using Password. Select if you want to set the password for Viewing or Editing the PDF. Type and retype your password. Click Apply.
Before you select and open the PDF, change the mode to Complete Rewrite, then switch to the Security tab and set the Security System to No encryption. Click the Save button and your PDF will no longer require a password to open.
Open the PDF and choose Tools Protect Encrypt Encrypt with Password. If you receive a prompt, click Yes to change the security. Select Require a Password to Open the Document, then type the password in the corresponding field.
Use the Components dropdown menu to determine that components of the document to be encrypted. Select the Require a password to open the document box to set a password for opening the document. Enter the password in the Document Open Password text box and confirm it in the text box below.
Select the Require a password to change permissions box for the document to set a password for editing and printing the document. Enter the password in the Change Permissions Password text box and confirm it in the text box below.
How to add passwords and permissions to PDF files: Open a file in Acrobat and choose Tools Protect. Select whether you want to restrict editing with a password or encrypt the file with a certificate or password. Set password or security method as desired. Click OK and then click Save.

On Windows, just right-click your PDF and select Properties Read-only OK. On a Mac computer, the process is a little more complex. Select the PDF and click File Get Info. You can then set access rights under the Sharing Permissions tab.
