The IRS requires you to use the legal name of the supplier on 1099 returns. A suppliers legal name is the name that the IRS associates with the suppliers TIN. A supplier enters their legal name on the W-9 form that they submit. For tax purposes, a supplier can have only one legal name.
This should be your full name. It should match the name on your individual tax return. If you have a business name, trade name, DBA name or disregarded entity name, fill it in here. If you do not have a business, you can leave this line blank.
While tax form W-9 is used most commonly by independent contractors, gig workers, and freelancers who are paid $600 or more by a business, it can also be used to report other types of income to the IRS.
You will need to fill out a W-9 form if you: Classify yourself as an independent contractor or freelancer. Are not a full-time employee of the business. Will be paid more than $600 for work provided to the business.
A Form W-9 must be completed by one party and furnished to a second party if the second party is going to furnish specific types of payments in the future. Most broadly, Form W-9 must be filled out by independent contractors that perform work for another party with which they are not employed.
When is a W9 Not Required? A W9 from vendors is not required when payments will be less than $600 in a calendar year, but it is a good idea to request a W9 from all vendors. Also a W9 is not required when payments are not associated with conducting a trade or business.
For proper processing, information for disregarded entities is reported as the owners name on line 1, and the disregarded entitys name is entered on line 2.
Do I Have to Pay Taxes if I Fill Out a W-9? If you receive more than 600 dollars from that company in a calendar year, then yes. However, simply filling out a W-9 doesnt require a person to pay taxes.
