Offset lithography became the most popular form of commercial printing from the 1950s (offset printing). Substantial investment in the larger presses required for offset lithography was needed, and had an effect on the shape of the printing industry, leading to fewer, larger, printers.
Prior to the invention of the printing press, books were produced by hand on various medium types including tablets, scrolls, papyrus and parchment. By the end of the Roman Empire, codices began to replace scrolls and paper slowly began to replace parchment.
This layout was photographed and a printing plate was created from the negative by a chemical process. That printing plate was then inked and pressed to a rubber cylinder; the rubber cylinder in turn, was rolled over reams of paper, with the still-wet ink, thus offsetting text and images onto the paper sheets.
In the beginning of their history, books were printed on a variety of materials, including fabric, papyrus, parchment, vellum and paper, depending on what was regionally available. However, it would take thousands of years before anything resembling a modern book would emerge.
The machine typesetting era began in 1886 and ended in 1976, and it is barely in practice (90 years). The phototypesetting era began in 1950 and ended around 1990, and it is totally gone (40 years). The laser imagesetting era began in 1978 and ended in 2008, replaced by direct-to-plate, on- and off-press (30 years).
Once printedeither by the letterpress or offset methodthe physical book had to be assembled. Because most books have too many pages for all of the pages to be seamlessly sewn together, the pages are subdivided into smaller sections called signatures.
The ancient art of word spacing and book design. Typesetting progressed from there into mechanical printing presses, then automated versions, and finally, the primary tool that most typesetters use today: vector graphics software.
Wikipedias definition of typesetting: Typesetting involves the presentation of textual material in graphic form on paper or some other medium. In a subtitling context, this means three things: Presenting (a translation of) the spoken dialogue to the viewer in an easily readable and visually pleasing form.
