The first tone is high and level. It is important to keep ones voice even (almost monotone) across the whole syllable when pronouncing the first tone. It is represented by a straight horizontal line above a letter in pinyin (or sometimes by a number 1 written after the syllable).
Mandarin Pinyin First Tone is called 一声 (yī shēng) in Chinese, literally meaning the first sound. It starts high and maintain the same high pitch the whole process. So it sounds high and flat. That is why it is also known as The High Level Tone.
As mentioned, there are mainly four tonal categories written in pinyin: high, rising, falling-rising and falling.
There are four tones in Chinese, and technically a fifth tone: the first tone (high/flat), the second tone (rising), third tone (low/flat) and fourth tone (falling), and the fifth neutral tone (toneless tone).
First tone: ma1 or mā Second tone: ma2 or m Third tone: ma3 or mǎ Fourth tone: ma4 or m
Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language, which means that tones are used to define the meaning of a word. There are five different tones for this: flat, rising, dip, falling, and neutral.
That is, the first tone is high and flat pitch, the second is rising pitch, the third is a low falling-rising pitch, and the fourth is falling pitch. Well discuss this further below. These tones can be seen on a tone chart like the one below.
Lets take the syllable ma. The meaning changes quite docHubly depending on the tone used.Mandarin has four tones. Listen to these examples: First tone (level)(mā) 妈(mother)Second tone (rising)(chung) 床(bed)Third tone (fall/rise)(wǒ) 我(I)Fourth tone (falling)(dn) 蛋(egg)
