Step 4 of a W-4 allows you to have additional amounts withheld by filling out one or more of the following three sections: Line 4(a) If you expect to earn non-job income not subject to withholding, such as income from dividends or retirement accounts, enter the amount in this section.
If the pay at each job is more similar, choosing Step 2(c) is more accurate than choosing Step 2(b). Step 2(c): If you (and your spouse) have a total of only two jobs held at the same time, you may check the box in Step 2(c) on the Forms W-4 for both jobs.
Instead, if you (and your spouse) have a total of only two jobs, you may check the box in option (c). The box must also be checked on the Form W-4 for the other job. If the box is checked, the standard deduction and tax brackets will be cut in half for each job to calculate withholding.
Using the page 4 chart that corresponds with your filing status, you would enter $5,040 on line 1 of the worksheet. Tables on page 4 show how much extra to withhold based on the incomes for the higher- and lower-paying jobs. The top table is for single filers or married people filing separately.
If you are single, have one job, have no children, have no other income and plan on claiming the standard deduction on your tax return, you only need to fill out Step 1 (your name, address, Social Security number and filing status) and Step 5 (your signature).
Employers use the information on a W-4 to calculate how much tax to withhold from an employees paycheck throughout the year. You have to fill out a W-4 when you start a new job, but you can adjust it at any time. If you had to pay a large tax bill or got a big refund this year, that might be a sign to review your W-4.
How to fill out a W-4 Step 1: Enter your personal information. Fill in your name, address, Social Security number and tax filing status. Step 2: Account for multiple jobs. Step 3: Claim dependents, including children. Step 4: Refine your withholdings. Step 5: Sign and date your W-4.
If you are someone who likes receiving a bigger tax refund with your annual return, changing your W-4 form to get more money with your refund is easy. You can choose what additional amount, if any, you want withheld from each paycheck on line 4(c) of the W-4 form.
