Adding Information to a Quotation Show any added information by placing that added information in square brackets within the quote. You CANNOT substitute parentheses for brackets, since they carry a different meaning.
When you quote directly from a source, enclose the quoted section in quotation marks. Add an in-text citation at the end of the quote with the author name and page number, like this: Heres a direct quote (Smith 8). Heres a direct quote (Trouble 22).
An exact quote should be in quotation marks ( ), or if the quotation is 40 words or more, should be formatted as a block quotation. Then you put an In-Text Citation right after the quotation to show where the quote came from.
Quotation is one way to incorporate what youve read into your writing. If you use someone elses words in your assignment, it is crucial to mark them clearly as a quotation and give a reference to the source. Its also important to understand how to make quotations work effectively to support your argument.
Different methods for creating a block quote in Word In a Word document, select the quoted text, then click Layout on the ribbon. Set the left indent to 0.5cm, and click the Enter key. Use the arrows in the indent size box to increase or decrease the indentation. Once in place, the block quote can be formatted.
In American English, use double quotation marks for quotations and single quotation marks for quotations within quotations. In British English, use single quotation marks for quotations and double quotation marks for quotations within quotations.
For example, copying a passage directly from a book, website, journal article, or any other source into a paper without using quotation marks and explicitly citing the source is considered plagiarism. Additionally, paraphrasing without citing the original source is considered plagiarism.
