When using APA format, follow the author-date method of in-text citation. This means that the authors last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text, like, for example, (Jones, 1998). One complete reference for each source should appear in the reference list at the end of the paper.
Click at the end of the sentence or phrase that you want to cite, and then on the References tab, in the Citations Bibliography group, click Insert Citations. From the list of citations under Insert Citation, select the citation you want to use.
Bulleted or numbered lists taken directly from a source can function as block quotes, which dont need quotation marks around the text. In the paragraph text before the list, introduce the source with a signal phrase, using verbs such as stated or declared. Then include a citation after the last list item.
Parenthetically cite the communicators name, the phrase personal communication, and the date of the communication in your main text. Note: Personal communications are cited within the text of your assignment, but do not get an entry in the Reference list. Put the citation right after a quote or paraphrased content.
Quotation marks are ALWAYS used in pairs, one at the beginning of the quoted text and one at the end. The same rule applies to titles and words used in a special sense or for emphasis. Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote.
In the reference list, provide the details of the work in which you found the quotation or idea (this work is considered the secondary source). For the in-text citation, include the author and year of both the original and secondary sources. Add as cited in between the sources in the in-text citation.
There are three main rules for quoting in APA Style: If the quote is under 40 words, place it in double quotation marks. If the quote is 40 words or more, format it as a block quote. Cite the author, year, and page number with an APA in-text citation.
When you write information from a source in your own words, cite the source by adding an in-text citation at the end of the paraphrased portion as follows: Mother-infant attachment became a leading topic of developmental research following the publication of John Bowlbys studies (Hunt, 1993).
