Conversation. When quoting written words, our guidance is to retain the style used by the writer; do not alter the written words even if they dont match AP style. If the clearest way to convey the information is to paraphrase a written quote, do that versus using parenthesis or ellipses.
More appropriately called a quotation mark and alternatively known as a double quote or inverted commas, a quotation mark is a symbol ( ) on a keyboard. It is located next to the Enter key on a US QWERTY keyboard. Where is the quote key on the keyboard?
For quotes within quotes If youre quoting someone whos quoting someone, use a single quote aka, an apostrophe within the quotation marks, as in: Right before she dumped me, she said, youve been playing video games for the last 19 hours.
Paraphrasing. When you write information or ideas from a source in your own words, cite the source by adding an in-text citation at the end of the paraphrased portion, like this: This is a paraphrase (Smith 8). This is a paraphrase (Trouble 22).
Instead of using long, direct quotes, the writer simply rewords the complex material in his own language. The paraphrased portion will usually be about the same length as the original sentence, but will be in the writers own words (source should be cited in ance to the formatting style of the assignment.)
Punctuation. When quotation marks are around a phrase spanning two or more captions, place quotation marks at the beginning of each caption, except for the caption containing the end of the quote - it should only contain a closing quotation mark.
If using a mixture of a paraphrase and a direct quote, be sure to a) use direct quotes around the part of the sentence that is quoted and b) add a citation at the end of the mixed quote-paraphrase.
