Letters of recommendation do three things: I) provide facts about the applicant 2) render a judgment as to the applicants ability and 3) make the applicant come alive, stand out against other applicants so that he or she will be remembered in the decision process.
The most effective letters of recommendation are written by professors or work supervisors who know you well enough to describe your academic, personal, or professional achievements and potential with candor, detail, and objectivity. Letters that compare you to your academic peers are often the most useful.
College professors and instructors are the best recommenders for law school. Law schools are most interested in academic letters of recommendation and some will specifically indicate that the letters of recommendation must be academic. Even if the schools dont specify, academic letters are preferred.
You do not need stamps or markers or a public notarys endorsement. I am in academia in the US and if we felt the need to verify a recommendation letter, we would just (1) look up the writer and (2) contact the writer directly.
How Long Does a Letter of Recommendation Last? You may be able to reuse letters of recommendation. However, many grad schools ask the letter-writer to submit the letter directly, so you will have to ask your writers to re-submit their letters each time you apply to a new program.
If the recommender wishes to share a copy of the letter with the student after theyve written it, thats up to them. But, admission counselors may be weary of a letter that is submitted by the student versus directly by the recommender. Ask someone who knows you more recently.
Keep copies of letters If you decide to apply for a similar job or academic program, you may also want to use the same letter of recommendation for that application. In this case, ask your reference for permission before you use their letter for another application.
Letterhead: When possible, write recommendations on official letterhead and sign them using a handwritten signature. Producing letters on official letterhead both adds to your credibility as a recommender and demonstrates that you care enough about the applicant to put finishing touches on your endorsement.
Keep copies of letters After you receive your letters of recommendation, make copies and store them in a place where you can access them again later.
In higher education, you should always waive your right to see your letters of recommendation and never ask for a copy. If you trust the person to recommend you, trust them to do it well; if you dont trust them, dont ask them to write you a letter. If you have no one you can trust, then rethink everything.
