Retention bonuses are not a long-term fix to employee turnover because they put an end date on an employees value to a company. Some employers make workers repay their retention bonus payout after resignation if they leave too soon, but this can project a lack of trust and further push away employees.
Its a sign that youre valued. If you needed a boost to your morale, a retention bonus offer may be just what the doctor ordered. After all, companies dont make these offers to every employee, so if you receive one then you can rest assured that your company values your employment. There may be room for negotiating.
What is a Retention Agreement? Retention agreements are contracts that employers use to help convince employees to remain employed. They often include monetary benefits and incentives to keep employees from leaving their employer for a different job. Retention agreements may include: The payment of a bonus.
It is paid one-time and usually is a docHub percentage (20-30%) of the base pay of the employee. 81% of the largest companies with over 20,000 employees use retention bonuses.
Thank you very much for the generous bonus offer. I believe the amount is appropriate, though I would like to discuss the retention period. I would be more comfortable with an 18-month retention period instead of a 24-month period.
Just because you accept a retention bonus doesnt mean you cant look for another job. Worst-case scenario? You pay back the money. However, in most cases, the money isnt paid to you until youve completed your obligation, so paying back the money isnt usually an issue.
Not if You Plan to Leave If the employee plans to leave the company soon, accepting a retention bonus may not make sense, since they may not be around to receive it. Consequently, if the employee plans to stay with the company for the long term, a retention bonus could be a useful supplement to their income.
Consider whether you want to stay with the company that issued the retention bonus. Determine whether you are OK with passing up other opportunities for the set amount of time in the agreement. Weight the pros and cons before accepting it. Negotiate the bonus if you decide to accept it.
