hi everyone on this channel I create videos packed with lots of great information this video is the second in a new series about using Microsoft Excel so if youd like to learn more about excel subscribe to my channel sometimes I get a list of names that are formatted such that theres a first name a space and then the last name and thats fine but sometimes I want to sort the names by last name and its difficult to do when theyre formatted like that so Im going to teach you how to take the list of names separate it out between the first name and the last name and then put it back together such that we have the last name a comma and then the first name lets get started by highlighting the names of the people were going to visit the data tab and then were going to select text to columns when Excel looks at our data you can automatically determine that between the words theres a space so by default in this situation its going to select delimited so at this point lets just click

Use names in formulas Select a cell and enter a formula. Place the cursor where you want to use the name in that formula. Type the first letter of the name, and select the name from the list that appears. Or, select Formulas Use in Formula and select the name you want to use. Press Enter.
Select the topmost cell of the range where you want the names to appear. Go to the Formulas tab Define Names group, click Use in Formulas, and then click Paste Names Or, simply press the F3 key. In the Paste Names dialog box, click Paste List.
To do this, go to the Formulas tab and click on Name Manager. Then, select the named range you want to copy and click on the Copy button. You will then be able to paste the named range into another worksheet. Another way to copy a named range is to use the Create From Selection feature.
To combine first and last names, use the CONCATENATE function or the ampersand () operator. Important: In Excel 2016, Excel Mobile, and Excel for the web, this function has been replaced with the CONCAT function.
Paste Special options Select the cells that contain the data or other attributes that you want to copy. On the Home tab, click Copy . Click the first cell in the area where you want to paste what you copied. On the Home tab, click the arrow next to Paste, and then select Paste Special. Select the options you want.
To paste a list of defined names to a location in the current workbook, do the following: Select the cell for the paste target, such as cell B5 in the example in figure 1. On the ribbon use the sequence Formulas Defined Names Use in Formula Paste Names (the last item), or simply press the F3 short cut.
To do this, go to the Formulas tab and click on Name Manager. Then, select the named range you want to copy and click on the Copy button. You will then be able to paste the named range into another worksheet.
Define a name for a cell or cell range on a worksheet Select the cell, range of cells, or nonadjacent selections that you want to name. Click the Name box at the left end of the formula bar. Name box. Type the name you want to use to refer to your selection. Names can be up to 255 characters in length. Press ENTER.
