Many systems implement either the many-to-many or the two-level model place an intermediate data structure between the user and kernel threads. This data structuretypically known as a lightweight process, or LWPis shown in below Figure.
Lightweight processes (LWPs) bridge the user level and the kernel level. Each process contains one or more LWP, each of which runs one or more user threads. (See Figure 1-1.) The creation of a thread usually involves just the creation of some user context, but not the creation of an LWP.
Some people call threads lightweight processes because they have their own stack but can access shared data. Since threads share the same address space as the process and other threads within the process, it is easy to communicate between the threads.
LWP is what essentially are called today threads. Originally, user thread meant a thread that is managed by the application itself and the kernel does not know anything about it. LWP, on the other hand, is a unit of scheduling and execution by the kernel.
Thread is also called as Light-weight process, as it present in same address block as the Process and shares the code, data and the OS resources of the process with fellow threads. It cost less resources to communicate between the threads.
Also threads within a process share the same address space because of which cost of communication between threads is low as it is using the same code section, data section and OS resources, so these all features of thread makes it a lightweight process.
A process is an instance of a program that is being executed or processed. Thread is a segment of a process or a lightweight process that is managed by the scheduler independently. Processes are independent of each other and hence dont share a memory or other resources. Threads are interdependent and share memory.
A thread is a lightweight process also called an LWP. A process has its own memory. A thread shares the memory with the parent process and other threads within the process. Inter-process communication is slower due to isolated memory.
LWP gives the thread id of each thread. NLWP is the number of threads in the system for the underlying process. In the ps output above, rsyslogd (pid 852) has 4 threads, NetworkManager (pid 874) has three threads and polkitd (pid 893) has two threads.
Threads are lightweight process only if threads of same process are executing concurrently. But if threads of different processes are executing concurrently then threads are heavy weight process.
