There are three primary types of dental impressions: preliminary, final and bite registration: Preliminary impressions: Preliminary impressions are used for diagnostic purposes, or as the initial step in the process of fabrication (making) of different prostheses, including crowns and dentures.
Mucostatic: impression plaster, light body elastomers. Mucocompressive: impression compound, putty elastomers. It is a thermoplastic, rigid and reversible impression material (meaning it can be reused in the same patient if an impression needs to be repeated). It is also known as a modeling compound.
Mixing the alginate impression material can be done in two ways: manual mixing or mechanical mixing. In the manual procedure, the proper mixture of water and powder cannot be accurately determined. Ideal water to powder ratio is 38 ml of water for 16 gm of powder. But it can vary ing to each manufacturer.
Mucocompressive theory claims to record the tissues in their functional / supporting form so as to achieve stability in occlusal function. This concept is not very encouraging since it seeks to subject the tissues to a continuous pressure which is conducive to resorptive changes in basal tissues.
Mucostatic means that the impression is taken with the mucosa in its normal resting position. These impressions will generally lead to a denture which has a good fit during rest, but during chewing, the denture will tend to pivot around incompressible areas (e.g. torus palatinus) and dig into compressible areas.
The composition for dental impression material comprises a sodium/or potassium alginate, calcium sulphate-dihydrate and/or calciumsulphate-hemihydrate, magnesium oxide, sodium and/or potassium silicate, tetrasodium and/or potassium pyrophosphate, diatomaceous earth, thymolphthalein and phenolphthalein.
Mucostatic: material does not displace the mucosa. Good for producing an impression of the tissues whilst not under load, with the tissue in a non-functional state. Most common use is with flabby ridges.
