Zinc oxide-eugenol paste are widely used in clinical dentistry, principally for impression of non-undercut edentulous ridges, or bite taking materials.
This article will discuss the 3 most common classifications of impression materials: polyether (PE), vinyl polysiloxane (VPS), and a hybrid material called vinyl polyether siloxane (VPES).
There are three primary types of dental impressions: preliminary, final and bite registration: Preliminary impressions: Preliminary impressions are used for diagnostic purposes, or as the initial step in the process of fabrication (making) of different prostheses, including crowns and dentures.
Dentists have been taught in dental school that alginate is the best and only material to take impressions. As it is cheap, easy to use, and quick dentists from all over the world use this as their go-to material for denture impressions.
The impression should be free of pulls, voids, and air bubbles (Figure 3). The preparations should be clean, crisp, and free of contamination; in addition, the impression material should have flowed 0.5 mm past the margin circumferentially around the tooth (Figure 4 through Figure 7).
Impression paste is a modified form of zinc oxide eugenol. Other properties are added to make it suitable to use as an impression material. It comes in two tubes: one containing a white zinc oxide mixture and the other containing a red eugenol mixture.
Classification of Impression Materials By their composition, the impression materials are divided into three major groups: nonaqueous elastomers, hydrocolloids, and inelastic materials. Elastomers include polysulfide, condensation and addition silicone, and polyether. Hydrocolloids are alginate and agar.
The only disadvantage of using zinc oxide/eugenol is its incompatibility with composite resins. If this is likely to be a problem, a non-eugenol dressing may be used but would lack antibacterial effect.
