The composition for dental impression material comprises a sodium/or potassium alginate, calcium sulphate-dihydrate and/or calciumsulphate-hemihydrate, magnesium oxide, sodium and/or potassium silicate, tetrasodium and/or potassium pyrophosphate, diatomaceous earth, thymolphthalein and phenolphthalein.
Impression paste is a modified form of zinc oxide eugenol. Other properties are added to make it suitable to use as an impression material. It comes in two tubes: one containing a white zinc oxide mixture and the other containing a red eugenol mixture.
Zinc oxide-eugenol paste are widely used in clinical dentistry, principally for impression of non-undercut edentulous ridges, or bite taking materials.
There are three primary types of dental impressions: preliminary, final and bite registration: Preliminary impressions: Preliminary impressions are used for diagnostic purposes, or as the initial step in the process of fabrication (making) of different prostheses, including crowns and dentures.
Alginate is more affordable than silicone impression material, has a good shelf life, handles easily, and is compatible with water. Its disadvantages include poor elastic recovery, dimensional instability, and it is not able to be properly disinfected.

Initial setting of ZOE impression material occurs at 2 to 2 min after start of the mix.
By their composition, the impression materials are divided into three major groups: nonaqueous elastomers, hydrocolloids, and inelastic materials. Elastomers include polysulfide, condensation and addition silicone, and polyether. Hydrocolloids are alginate and agar.
Mix Ratio: 13g base to 5.6g catalyst. The addition of more base causes the mix to be thicker and take longer to set. More catalyst produces a thinner mix which sets faster. Plastopaste is the perfect wash for Bosworths Superpaste, a heavy body zinc oxide eugenol impression material.
Eugenol may be substituted with other compounds such as lauric acid to eliminate the odour and taste of eugenol, or for patients allergic to eugenol.
