There are three primary types of dental impressions: preliminary, final and bite registration: Preliminary impressions: Preliminary impressions are used for diagnostic purposes, or as the initial step in the process of fabrication (making) of different prostheses, including crowns and dentures.
Impression paste is a modified form of zinc oxide eugenol. Other properties are added to make it suitable to use as an impression material. It comes in two tubes: one containing a white zinc oxide mixture and the other containing a red eugenol mixture.
The composition for dental impression material comprises a sodium/or potassium alginate, calcium sulphate-dihydrate and/or calciumsulphate-hemihydrate, magnesium oxide, sodium and/or potassium silicate, tetrasodium and/or potassium pyrophosphate, diatomaceous earth, thymolphthalein and phenolphthalein.

Eugenol may be substituted with other compounds such as lauric acid to eliminate the odour and taste of eugenol, or for patients allergic to eugenol.
By their composition, the impression materials are divided into three major groups: nonaqueous elastomers, hydrocolloids, and inelastic materials. Elastomers include polysulfide, condensation and addition silicone, and polyether. Hydrocolloids are alginate and agar.
Alginate is more affordable than silicone impression material, has a good shelf life, handles easily, and is compatible with water. Its disadvantages include poor elastic recovery, dimensional instability, and it is not able to be properly disinfected.
Zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) impression paste is the most commonly used material for complete denture wash impression due to its cost-effectiveness and ease of manipulation, while providing the advantage of ability to record fine minute tissue details.
