Steve here again from Photoshop Essentials. In this video, Ill show you how to paste an image into a layer mask in Photoshop. In my case, Im going to paste this texture image into a mask on my type layer so I can add more interest to the text. But this works great with normal pixel layers and shape layers as well, and you would just follow the same steps. So the first thing I need to do is add a layer mask to the type layer. In the Layers panel, Ill make sure I have my type layer selected, and then Ill click the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom. And we see the layer mask thumbnail added to the layer. Next, Ill switch over to my texture image which is in its own separate document. And I need to get this image into the same document as my text. An easy way to do that is to just copy and paste it.
